What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is like giving healthcare a 21st-century upgrade. Instead of chasing symptoms, it’s all about finding out what’s really going on inside your body. It’s a bit like a puzzle, connecting the dots between your lifestyle, environment, and genes to understand your health’s unique story.

For example, let’s say two people have the same headache.

  • In traditional medicine, they’d probably both get painkillers.
  • But in functional medicine, we’d ask, “Why is this headache happening?”
What is Functional Medicine 1

One person might be dehydrated, and another might be stressed.

The headache is the same, but the root causes are different. That’s the beauty of functional medicine, it’s all about personalized, whole-body health.

What is a Functional Medicine Health Coach?

As a functional medicine health coach, you’re the detective sidekick to your clients on their health journeys. But, you’re not just looking for clues; you’re helping your clients rewrite their health stories.

It’s not just about health; it’s about empowering your clients to live their best lives.

As a functional medicine health coach, you’re not just in the business of health, but also the business of hope, empowerment, and transformation. Pretty epic, right?

Functional Medicine Health Coach vs Health Coach?

What sets a functional medicine health coach apart from a regular health coach? It’s all about the approach. While both types of coaches are in the business of promoting healthier lifestyles, a functional medicine health coach takes it to a whole new level.

Functional Medicine Health Coach vs Health Coach?

As a functional medicine health coach, you’re not just focusing on surface-level habits like diet and exercise. Instead, you dig deeper. You help clients understand the root causes of their health issues and guide them on a path that addresses those causes.

You’re like a health detective and a coach rolled into one!

Plus, your training equips you to work closely with other healthcare professionals. This means you can provide your clients with a seamless care experience that aligns their wellness goals with their medical care.

In short, as a functional medicine health coach, you’re helping clients build a healthier life from the ground up, factoring in everything from their genes to their sleep habits.

It’s a comprehensive and rewarding approach to health coaching. And guess what? You’re just a few steps away from diving into this exciting journey. Let’s keep going!

Long-Term Goals and Outcomes for Clients

But what does this long game look like for your future clients? Let’s paint a picture.

1. Empowered Self-Care: First and foremost, your clients will learn to take their health into their own hands. With your guidance, they’ll gain the knowledge and skills to make healthier lifestyle choices that align with their unique needs. They’ll learn that self-care isn’t just about spa days – it’s about nourishing their bodies, calming their minds, and creating an environment that supports their well-being.

2. Root-Cause Resolution: Remember those root causes we talked about? As a functional medicine health coach, you’ll help your clients address them head-on. Over time, this can lead to fewer health issues and a greater sense of overall well-being. Say goodbye to band-aid solutions and hello to real healing!

You’ll help them discover healthy habits that they actually enjoy, which makes it easier for them to stick with it. Because let’s face it, nobody’s going to keep doing something they hate, right?

4. Enhanced Quality of Life: This is the big one. At the end of the day, your clients will enjoy a better quality of life. They’ll have more energy, better moods, and a newfound appreciation for their health. They’ll learn to see their health as an investment, not an expense.

  1. Hi Cass,

Thanks for putting this all together. I was recently about to start school for acupuncture but I sort of backed out last minute. I’ve wanted to be involved in natural medicine for a long time but this field came to my attention recently through a friend and I think it would be a much better fit for me. However, I do not have any former medical degrees. Do you know if it is possible to start a business as a functional medicine coach with a just the certification from IFM?

    1. Hey Colleen! It’s great to hear from you. It sounds like you’re on an exciting path, exploring functional medicine coaching. While we are not experts in the specific requirements for every area, generally, a certification from IFM can be a strong foundation to start your business, especially if you’re passionate and committed. It’s always a good idea to check any additional local regulations or requirements. Best of luck on this new adventure!

  2. You mention that if functional medicine health coaching courses pricing is too steep, you could consider getting a health coach certification, and then adding on functional medicine courses. What health coach certification courses offer add on functional medicine courses that you would recommend?
