#1 Google hasn’t found your coaching website

If you’re new to the web, it might just be that Google doesn’t know you exist yet. Typically, you have to wait for Google’s bots to find your coaching website and then add it to the Google index, but that can take forever. I could write an entire post on how to speed up the process, but here’s what you can do right now:

  • Create a sitemap – a sitemap is a file where you can list the web pages of your coaching website to tell Google and other search engines about your site content. Web crawlers then use this list as a sort of map to more easily find their way around and index everything.

Our coaching website templates are built on Showit to make this process easier for you. Showit automatically generates a sitemap of coaching website pages when you publish. You’ll find your sitemap by going to: yourdomain.com**/siteinfo.xml**
  • Use Google Analytics – Simply registering your site with Google Analytics gives Google a “heads up” that you exist and could help speed up the process of them “finding” you. All you need to do is sign up for a free Google Analytics account. From there, you’ll be provided with a code called a “tracking ID” formatted similar to this: UA-000000-01.

Once you get your tracking ID, you need to add it to the header of your coaching website.
  • Submit your site to search engines – Web crawlers will eventually find you on their own, but there’s no telling how long it will take. The fact of the matter is, if you have a 2 or 3-day old site, it’s not going to show up in a search, period. Rather than wait around for the crawlers, submit your URL to Google, Bing, and Yahoo and make sure they know you’re there.

#2 Your content is lacking keywords

Utilizing search engine keywords can help you get more -and higher-quality – traffic to your coaching website. When you identify topics that potential coaching clients will find useful and create valuable material, you greatly multiply the chances that your next client will visit your page. Sites like Google and Yahoo notice when people spend time looking at your content, and it helps you rank higher in search results. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Spend some time researching your target audience – find out what they’re interested in, what they do for fun, what they wish they didn’t have to do, and what they’re lacking in their lives.
  • Make a list of topics based on your research and then find the relevant keywords. There are many great free keyword research tools, like Google Keyword Planner and WordStream, that can help you along your way.
  • Identify negative keywords (words that you should avoid). Negative keywords are typically related to the content you’re marketing, but just not quite right. WordStream has a great tool for that as well.

#3 You’re not active on social media

According to SearchMetrics, “The top-ranked websites in Google’s rankings displays vastly more social signals than all other pages…. This is primarily due to the overlap between brand websites performing strongly in social networks and being allocated top positions by Google.”

While just how much social signals count is unclear, it’s obvious that they’re very important. If you want to get noticed, create social media profiles, link them to your website, share links to your blog, and create landing pages featuring your most important information. The more links to your site you get out there – and the more people that share those links – the faster you’ll move up in search rankings.

#4 You’re not blogging

Great coaching websites are constantly changing and growing, and a blog is one way to make that happen. Unlike other material on your site, such as your products and services page, or your rates, your blog can constantly be updated to reflect new and fun information. When you blog consistently, you will increase engagement with your audience, and when people like what you have to say, they will share that with their circle of influence. It’s one of the easiest, most cost-effective, ways to drive new traffic to your site.

#5 You aren’t utilizing traditional advertising methods

Many coaches have let traditional advertising methods fall by the wayside in lieu of online marketing, but they can be a great way to increase your audience. In-person networking using business cards, flyers, postcards, and other traditional sources is a great way to garner interest in your product and drive traffic to your website.

Improving your SEO, and driving more traffic to your site, doesn’t have to be hard. With a little time and effort, you can implement the steps listed above and get your coaching business on the first page of Google in no time.
