If you want to achieve something, you need to have a clear idea of what it is and how you’re going to get there. 

One way to help your clients set smart goals is by asking them some questions about their desired outcome.

What are Goal Setting Questions?

The beautiful thing about coaching is that we help our dream big and come to face to face with the real goals they want to accomplish. 

Although this is the best part of coaching, sometimes our clients can get stuck in the dream phase never accomplishing what they’ve uncovered. This is the main reason for unhappy coaching relationships, where coaches are unable to tie breakthroughs with action and clients are no longer progressing. 

The following questions were selected to help your clients move from the dream state to real action.

13 Goal Setting Questions to Use on Yourself and Clients

1. What will you accomplish by when?


2. Now, let’s turn it into action: what will you do?


3. Can you think of any other approaches to this?


4. What other obstacles should we address before moving forward? How could you remove them?


5. If you could make a change in a month, three months, a year — whatever time frame you want to work with — what would it look like?


6. Can you come up with any other options?


7. Do you think that’s a reasonable timeframe?


8. In the past, how did you handle similar situations?


9. Is there any way to state your objective so that it only depends on what you do, and not on what others do or choose to do?


10. What could you do today, tomorrow, or this week to move toward your goal?


11. Let’s come up with at least five solutions. Is there anything else you can do?


12. Are you able to quantify your progress in a way that we can evaluate it?


13. If you achieve this goal, what will be different?
